The First-Time Father: Baby’s First Year by Alfie Thomas is a wonderful and informative read. The book was written for fathers and fathers-to-be by a father. It delves into what an expectant father should do and how to prepare for the birth and arrival of a baby. The book also goes into detail on how fathers should care for a new baby while being supportive of and sensitive to the needs of their partner.

Guidance is provided throughout the novel on emotional and mental preparation for the arrival of a baby and developing a plan with your partner for baby care. It also mentions the emotional and physical needs of a baby. Typically, pregnancy and child-rearing are seen heavily as women’s roles, however, the author stresses on the need of fathers to be just as involved in the lives of their children. Such active involvement is gratifying and rewarding. Vital information, such a developing and establishing feeding and sleeping routines are also touched upon. The author also discusses finding a balance between being a father and having a job and choosing an effective parenting style.

The positive aspect of this book is that Thomas does a masterful job of relaying information to other men. Typically, baby books are aimed towards women, but men need advice and emotional support as well, coming into the role of fatherhood. I loved that the author put so much of himself into the pages of his book and used his and his wife’s story as the centerpiece. In that way, there was a lot of warmth in the story and you can tell it was written from a place of love. As a parent, I was very impressed with what I read. The author left almost nothing out and he is very in-tuned to what he was writing about.

I found nothing negative about the book. It was very well-written and detail oriented. The author did some research to add credence to his book. This, in addition to his own experiences, made for a perfect book.

Based on my above sentiments, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The author did a commendable job with his ingenuity. The book was very professionally edited, as I saw only a couple of errors. I would recommend this book to all expectant fathers and those who are already fathers. There may just be something to learn here. Mothers and expectant mothers can also have a read, as the information is beneficial to any parent.
