Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a memoir, an autobiography of a great man. Ghoulem Berrah was born in the small town of Aïn Beïda, Algeria. Raised by his loving and supportive mother, Ghoulem became a medical doctor and a freedom fighter for his country. As an upstanding young man, many great leaders trust him very much. Especially President Houphouët-Boigny of Cotê d'Ivoire, where Dr. Berrah became his most trusted advisor and adopted son. Together, they fought in many “battles” to bring peace, harmony, and love to Africa. A grand adventure that I thought only existed in movies awaits on every page of A Dream For Peace.
What I like the most about this book is the writing style. It is felt like the author is speaking directly to the reader. Making it a very enjoyable reading experience and not a boring one. The story itself is remarkable. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah did many incredible things; his breakthrough in discovering what was later known as a “Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme”, his many dialogs for peace with many world leaders, his days in prison, and even his fight for his true love. It is almost unbelievable that a real man went through all of that in his lifetime. At times, I felt like I was reading a fictional book instead of an autobiography.
The part I like the most is chapter eleven: “Our Common Faith”. As a devout Muslim married to a devout Catholic, Dr. Berrah does not see his interfaith marriage to be a problem because he believes, although in different ways, that his wife and he worship the same God. He had many friends from different religions and he considered them his brothers. As a young boy, his mother always asks him to help his Jewish neighbors turn on their lights during the Sabbath. He even mentions that the Holy Qur'an clearly states that he, as a Muslim, must respect all others of different religions. I can't help to think as I read his book that if only the people of today had the same understanding as him about love and peace in every religion, we would live in a very peaceful world.
I found nothing to dislike about this book. There were a few errors, but they didn't affect the overall reading experience. I can say that this book is professionally edited. I gladly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book opened my eyes to the struggle of people in Africa and the whole world. A fight for peace is a long and arduous road, but there are men who walk it like H.E. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah.
I recommend this book to those who delve into politics because they can learn a thing or two from the diplomacy of smiles. Readers who want to learn about the history of the colonization of Africa would also enjoy this book. In the end, I highly recommend this book to everyone, because the message of peace and love should be read by all.
