William Cooper is a columnist known for his thought-provoking in writing about US politics. His last book, Stress Test: How Donald Trump Threatens American Democracy, is about politic critics during the late Trump era and the US election in 2020.

Cooper draws a broader picture and goes beyond bipartisanship. In this book, he describes Donald Trump as a threat for American democracy but not a dictator like the democrats always depict him. He talks easily of the biases that affect most of the citizens due to conspiracy theories, misinformation and fake news. According to him, the problem root from the social media, the press and the TV show that captivate most of public attention. The author also signals a drastic change in US politics who tend towards a derationalisation and criminalisation of the actors.

The book explains in 9 chapters how the American Democracy was threatened during this period but manage to withstand the storm. The stress test has shown that the Constitution has its strengths and weaknesses. The latter should be addressed for the future to avoid the event in the Capitol during the 2020 US election. Stress Test begins by the impeachment of the former president in 2019. After a deep dive in some notable events before, during and post election, it close with a though forward.

I highly recommend this book for anybody with open mind and interesting in the American politic. This is also a good experience for students or academics in sociology, psychology or social science broadly speaking. However, if you are a fervent supporter of the 45th president, you may not enjoy this book because it will give you a cognitive dissonance like the author says it.

It’s fair to give this book 4 stars out of 4 because everyone with just a little knowledge of American Constitution can read it.
