Review of A Dream For Peace
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a practical example that no matter the adversity, hurdles, and challenges one faces if you persevere and endure such challenges without giving up, you will triumph in the end. A Dream For Peace is an insightful and inspirational memoir by the author which grants us peculiar insights into the evils of colonialism and control in Africa and the crucial roles he played as a nationalist and peace advocate in fighting for peace and liberation.
These feats do not come without thorns or hurdles. Dr. Ghoulem has to rise past systemic discrimination and prejudice, as well as criticism from his people, as he works for President Felix Houphouet of Cote d’Ivoire. He also persevers through serving jail time and losing his scholarship in Bordeaux, all the while as he witnessed his people being treated as inferior beings by French colonialists. His is a story of the power of sacrifice, humility, patience, and determination.
There are so many positive aspects to be gleaned from this book. I was particularly impressed and educated by the level of historical insights which were evident in this book. Leafing through the pages was like going on a historical journey through time. Led by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, we see the historical and systemic discrimination and prejudice faced by Algerians and Africa in general. He highlighted significant historical incidents, like the Nigerian Civil War and Apartheid in South Africa.
Within this rich historical account, we also see the human side of the author as he goes through life. Through the perils of the challenges and difficult circumstances, we see a man full of forgiveness, love, sacrifice, determination, and patience. We witness his love for science and the various breakthroughs he engineers. We connect with him as he meets and loves his wife, Titi, regardless of the fact that they are both of different religious backgrounds and roots. This message of religious tolerance and harmony is also one of the most potent messages contained in this book.
I found nothing to dislike in this book except, perhaps, the excessive length of the book. I felt, as the book neared its conclusion, a lot of details added towards the end were unnecessary. Nevertheless, this did not detract from the quality of this book. It was professionally edited, as I discovered only a few errors. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of all the positive qualities it possesses. I recommend it to lovers of historical and educative memoirs with great lessons.
