Review of Individual Influence
The book, Individual Influence: Find the "I" in Team, is a unique take on a self-help book. The book stresses the importance of self-discovery and finding your best self. The author, Mary Smith, contradicts one of the most famous quotes, "There is No I in Team". She states that there is an “I” in team. Her meaning behind this is that teams are made up of individuals, and each person contributes to the collective power of the team. Smith emphasizes that people need to slow down and focus on themselves sometimes. Before anyone can be the best for others, they must discover who they are and who they want to be. This book walks the reader through realistic steps and lessons to self-discovery. Smith uses her own real-life experiences to help the reader set themself up for success. The book will teach the reader how to delegate, hold accountability, define values, and achieve balance in their lives. This book will also allow the reader to learn the art of controlling their thoughts, and how this skill can reshape their reality. Smith presents the reader with all the tools needed to live a life full of opportunity and success!
I found so much value in reading this book. The lessons the reader included in this book were extremely realistic and easy to implement. I believe that this book is beneficial to everyone, regardless of what stage of their life they are in. The steps and philosophies included are very clear and simple to follow. The author also does an excellent job implementing solutions to everyday challenges. Sometimes in self-help books, I do not relate to the problems the author discusses. However, in this book, I found each challenge Smith included to be very relevant to my life. I can see most readers being able to relate to these as well. I also loved how the reader used her own experiences to write her lessons. This makes the solutions and tips in this book seem more credible. The author also includes key takeaways throughout the book. This is her way of summarizing what she has just discussed in a clear and concise way. I found this aspect of the book to be very beneficial. It was a way for me to recap what I had just learned, and make sure I understood it correctly.
There was not much to dislike about this book. The only critique I have is that some of Smith’s stories went on for too long. Smith intentionally includes her life stories to give the reader a better understanding, however, I think some of her stories included unnecessary details. I found myself trying to skip through certain sections where I did not see an end to the stories and questions. However, I only felt this a few times during the book.
Overall, this was a great book. Smith’s clear and organized writing style made the book so easy to understand and engage with. She also includes key takeaways at the end of each section in her book. This allows the reader to clearly understood what she just discussed. I also found no grammatical errors, which makes me believe that this book was professionally edited. My only critique was that some of her personal stories were long and unnecessary at times. For the reasons stated, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5.
I would recommend this book to anyone trying to reshape the way they go about their life. This book will allow the reader to learn helpful tips and tricks to discover their best self. If you are someone that wants to learn how to achieve balance in your life then I would highly recommend reading this book!
