Review of Kill Your Characters
Are you an amateur writer hoping to write your own crime story but not sure where to begin? Are you already a flourishing crime novelist wanting to sharpen your skills? Kill Your Characters by Steve Rush might just be the kind of book that will help you achieve all of your goals as a crime fiction writer. The book serves as a comprehensive guide on how to make a crime narrative believable by combining literary techniques with principles in forensic science.
What I like most about this book is that it is very thorough and extensive. It does not simply dictate what one must do in terms of writing crime scenes but also provides detailed explanations of elements one must consider while writing. It's like a guide that will help a writer intelligently plan and execute his piece. There are guide questions to observe and writing prompts to follow, which can be of great assistance to those looking for a way to practice their skills.
As someone who only likes reading about crime and detective stories, it is interesting to know how much thought and research goes into writing these pieces. There are plenty of aspects to consider, such as the evidence, the witnesses, the inciting incident, and the offender's identity. The author also elaborates on different ways a character can die, such as transportation death, asphyxia, or gunshot injury. The author advises on how a writer will be able to effectively deliver a believable story. It is also interesting to learn about some terms used in forensic science, like "rigor mortis," which is a term used for the process of the stiffening of muscle tissues following a person's death.
I feel like the book is already perfect as it is. It has everything a writer needs to know in order to improve his or her craft. It has a nice organization, and the visuals are pleasing to look at. The text is free of any errors, so I will then conclude that the narrative has excellent editing.
This book deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is a comprehensive guide that every aspiring crime novelist should pick up and learn something from. I could only imagine how much research went into creating this book. I do not have anything negative to say about the narrative. If you are a writer who wants to venture into crime fiction, this is exactly the kind of book you may want to dive into.
