Review of Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream
At just 16 years old Frank Douglas was already aware of the discrimination people of color, like him, were made to face. Growing up with four siblings and not much money, Frank was determined to change his fate. As a result of his hard work at school in Guyana, he is given a scholarship to study at a university in America. While telling the reader that story, he also details the journey of his life and the struggles he faced as a result of poverty, racism, and discrimination.
Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream by Dr. Frank L. Douglas is a very well-written memoir that exposes readers to a reality they may not wish to face.
After reading this book, I realized how sheltered from the harsh reality of the world many people are. In order to spark change, I believe people need to be shown the true problems other people face, with no filter or censoring. Only then will they realize that something needs to be done. I found that this book does that very well. It shows the reader the issues that people have to face, just as a result of the color of their skin. It is an incredibly sad reality – one that needs to change.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved how the author wrote the story using his valuable life lessons and memories. It was exceptionally enlightening to hear stories directly from a man that has experienced the discrimination that the world is, disgustingly, still rife with. I think he possesses a beautiful ability to display who he is through his writing.
There was so much to enjoy about this book. I liked the short-ish chapters, as they kept me captivated and entertained throughout my time reading. It felt profoundly personal to the author, as I could undoubtedly feel his complex emotions coming through the words written. While I do believe this book was professionally edited, I think it could have used another round of editing as I discovered two errors. However, this was not enough to detract from my score. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for all the reasons mentioned above.
I would heartily recommend this book to all readers over the age of 16, the reason being there are a few instances of minor profanity as well as some mentions of sex. I genuinely believe that even non-fiction readers should give this book a try as they could absorb many valuable lessons.
