Review of The First Time Father
The First Time Father: The Expectant Survival Guide for First-Time Dads Through Pregnancy Journey by Alfie Thomas is a handy tool and informative book written by a father for fathers. This book provides step-by-step guidelines that empower first-time dads. If you and your partner are expecting a baby (or babies) and do not know where to start with preparing for the baby or if you don’t know how to support your pregnant partner, then this book is for you.
In the first part, Thomas breaks down the progression of pregnancy month-by-month by discussing the changes the pregnant partner may experience and how the dad-to-be can positively navigate this period and support the partner effectively, even during delivery. Bringing the baby home from the hospital can be tricky and scary for new parents. The second part of this book provides dads with guidelines on how to take care of the baby and the recovering mother. After a couple of months in this new role, you might wonder what’s next. How do you define your role in your family life and strengthen your relationship as a parent? These questions and more are addressed in the third chapter of this book.
Thomas teaches first-time fathers all the do’s and don’ts from pregnancy, and labor, to early fatherhood. As a father to three children, he has firsthand practical experience and has tried and tested the advice, tips, and tricks he shares. I liked the holistic and balanced approach he employed in this book. Although most of the attention goes to the pregnant partner, dads also need support and guidance. And that is exactly what Thomas offers to first-time fathers: support.
Sex is mentioned a few times in this book, but not explicitly or uncomfortably. The language used is mostly clean, with a few minor profane terms. The only errors I noticed in the Kindle version were the formatting glitches. Some headings are in between paragraphs. Other than those, there were no grammatical or typographical errors.
The insights and the author’s experience make this book relatable and easy to comprehend. There was nothing I disliked about this book. It was informative and educational. My overall rating is 5 out of 5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
I recommend this book to expecting dads and first-time dads. It is a one-stop shop that will leave dads feeling equipped physically, mentally, financially, romantically, and emotionally. If you are a want-to-be mommy or an expecting mommy, I urge you to purchase this book for your partner. You will not go wrong.
