Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer is a concise but detailed book written to guide persons into have a successful, planned second half of their life through financial planning. It opens by presenting us with the historical perspective of financial planning and leads into current practices. Career assessment was one topic it covered which was an eye opener for me as it was not something most persons including myself have thought about. Familiar topics such as life insurance, social security, investments, 401K, Medicare, Medicaid and the like that tend to be tedious reading follows in subsequent chapters; however, E. Alan Fleischauer fills the chapters with lighthearted jokes that breaks up the monotony. There are also useful web tools relevant the chapters so that the reader is actively engaged whilst reading. There are no fluff chapters that many authors use to create a more imposing document; E. Alan Fleischauer gets right to the point and does not expound any more than is absolutely necessary.

What I liked the most was that the author managed to bring across the information in a conversational manner as you would have with an old, knowledgeable friend. The sincere, responsibility that the author has towards ensuring his reader grasps and is able to use this information shines through.

My only dislike is that most of the references in Reconfigurement refer to systems that are specific to the United States of America. Systems such as Medicare and Medicaid; policies specific to their Social Security Program and specific tax laws all made those topics non-relevant for me as a British citizen living in the Caribbean.

Reconfigurement is not a book that one can read in a single sitting. Although the chapters are short, they are jam packed with information that require the reader to properly ingest and grasp whilst taking notes. Despite my best efforts I found myself zoning out and realized that Reconfigurementis best approached in a step-by-step manner. E. Alan Fleischauer throughout encourages the reader to take breaks while reading to prevent brain fatigue. I rate this book five out of five for the authors’ ability to break down a tough subject, with an enthusiastic and humorous lilt to his writing. I also found this book to be well edited.

Reconfigurement is best suited for anyone who is interested in long term financial planning. It is best utilized by persons planning for their retirement within the American system.
