Being a new parent is always thrilling and exciting. The journey of parenting is more often than not shown from the mother’s perspective and the experience of a new dad is hardly spoken about. So, to shed light on the father’s duties and responsibilities, the author, Thomas Alfie has written a nonfictional work called, The First-Time Father: Baby’s First Year.

This book is a short practical guide for new fathers, to help them in taking care of their babies during the infancy period. It is around 150 pages long and divided into ten chapters. The author has kept this book simple and concise, making it easy for busy dads to read.

The book begins with the author and his wife, Anna, welcoming their first child. Here, the author talks about how he prepared for his wife’s delivery, and all the essential things that is needed during that period. He has urged the new dads to read and learn about birthing and parenting. He has also touched the topics like the importance of the father during early infancy, work-life balance, child’s development, etc. So, if you want to know more about parenting, then you must read this book.

First of all, this is a wonderful book about parenting, and not just for fathers, but for mothers too. The author has included all the necessary and crucial information that is required to ace the game of parenting. I highly appreciate the fact that the author has spoken about the intimacy issues that may arise between husband and wife after having a baby, and also how to resolve them. In my opinion, it is important to talk about the relationship between husband and wife after having a baby and not just about parenting and responsibilities. It is good to see that the author has openly talked about the positive as well as the negative emotions that he experienced. The best part is that he has given the details of the milestones that the infant achieves in the first year of life, which helps the parents track the child’s growth and development in a better way. The biggest appeal for me is the tips given for being an effective parent. They are very beneficial for new and working parents.

All in all, this was a great book and I loved to read parenting from a father’s perspective. There is nothing that I disliked about this book. The book seems to be well-edited, as I did not find any errors while reading. With that being said, I rate The First-Time Father: Baby’s First Year 5 out of 5 stars. I have no reason to rate this any lower.

I highly recommend this book to soon-to-be parents, especially first-time fathers. This book is also suitable for any who wants to know the role of a father during a child’s infancy.

In one day I've seen three first time dad books and I don't think I've ever seen one before. Your review was interesting to read. It is great that this book shows a father's perspective. I also thought it was interesting that it explored the relationship between partners and not just the mom/dad relationships.
