The Gaming Revision Guide by M.P. Thompson is promoted as a study guide for gamers. It is to be published in the United Kingdom.
I will start out by saying, if you are not in the United Kingdom, or are not British, you might not immediately understand what the writer is referring to when he talks about revising. He is not, as I originally believed, talking about revising a paper or editing a video game. When Thompson refers to revising, he is talking about studying. It also should be pointed out that the gaming referred to in this guide is sports video games (football, soccer, hockey, etc.), not gaming as it is understood by most 'gamers'. When I think gaming, I think Call of Duty, Halo, World of Warcraft, etc. This study guide would not apply to those who enjoy games of that style. It is aimed solely at those who enjoy video games in the sports genre.
This guide seems to be aimed at the high school, or maybe early college student. For the most part, it is written in fairly simple verbiage that anyone should be able to understand - again with the understanding that it is written by a British author, so those from another country may not be familiar with all of the language used. It does seem that this method of study will work only if you have a good length of time to become familiar with the materials and are not cramming for a test you have to take tomorrow. It is quite a lengthy process to prepare for the method and to set everything up. That probably should be made a little clearer in the beginning of the guide. It also seems like this method would not work for every type of class. For example, I could not study for a math test using The Gaming Revision Guide. However, for those who are preparing for a final exam and have a week or more to study, I could see this being an interesting, fun way to prepare.
This is a very short book, and it seems that Thompson tries to lengthen it by adding well-known study tips to the end of the guide, almost padding it, rather than adding true value. I also wish Thompson had used examples that were more applicable to the student the guide seems aimed at. He uses Marxism, which many high school students would not be able to relate to.
Overall, I give The Gaming Revision Guide a 2 out of 4. It is short and fairly easy to read, which is perfect for a study guide. However, if you are a gamer and don't look closely at the subtitle, you may find yourself surprised to see this only applies to sports games. It should also be a little clearer that the set-up time for this method is quite lengthy. I would say if you are a high school or early college student, love the sports genre in your video games, have some time to prepare for your test and need a fun way to study, then this is the guide for you.
