Review of Why Does Government Need to be Funded?
A book that dares tackle the questions that most people do not even think of asking, Why Does Government Need to be Funded? by Amphidromus is a revelation. Through his writings, the author forces us to confront our assumptions and rethink everything we have taken for granted. It sets forth concrete arguments about topics ranging from how there is more to money and governments are simultaneously less and more capable than we imagine. It is fitting that the first word of the title is ‘Why’ because that is the question that keeps recurring throughout the content.
I truly appreciated this book for various reasons. The table of contents sets up the book's foundation. It outlines the clear-cut journey the author will take us on, from exploring money at a level of being to understanding the structural flaws of capitalism. The nature of the author is apparent from his pseudonym. The author's pen name is well thought out, intending to signify a calm region amidst a turbulent zone. The question around which the book revolves is one that I have unfortunately never considered, much like most people. This is the issue that the author tackles first - why don't we talk about this question? Why aren’t doubts like this raised openly as often as they should be? It is eye-opening in a very intriguing way as if someone has roused us from a slumber with cold water.
I enjoy how the author thoughtfully presented his ideas and concepts. He advocates for the proper understanding of money, which can give us blessings and help us accomplish a lot. He postulates solutions such as capitalist wealth creation in the private sector coupled with socialist wealth distribution in the public sector. He certainly has a way with his words, and his depth of knowledge is very apparent while he explains and justifies his perceptions to the readers. It is refreshing and revolutionary at the same time. A major component of what he wants us to do is critically re-examine our ideas and deeply think about how we can sustain our dreams of an ideal, just, politically fair, and economically stable society.
Although there wasn’t anything I would call negative about this book, I do want to say that it is quite US-centric at times. However, the author also talks about the world situation, taking different factors into account. Moreover, the book is more targeted at a knowledgeable audience. People with at least a working understanding of the explored concepts will be positively impacted. It is very well-edited; I found only one minor error.
I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars. The points I have mentioned are not cons; rather, they serve to make the book appropriate for its intended audience. Many concepts made me stop and think, which is a great sign in a book. I recommend it to people looking for a fresh, comprehensive outlook on political-economic systems and those who want their worldview shaken.
