In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is a philosophical dive into what it means to be human. The book opens by clarifying its intended audience; people of all religious or political belief systems will benefit from the messages within. Then, the work begins. Hughes takes the reader through a series of philosophical concepts ranging from the infamous mind-body problem to understanding unification. However, this book does more than tout philosophy; the latter portion dives into eleven honest, practical suggestions to liberate oneself. Through the narrative, Hughes teaches the reader to reflect, find connection, and practice self-love. Overall, the book teaches how to love one another through loving oneself.

I immensely enjoyed this book. As a non-religious person, I was initially skeptical of the messages within but quickly found the writing universally applicable. I never felt pressured or judged about my beliefs (or lack thereof). One of my favorite concepts in this book was temporal love, which hit me hard as someone who struggles with procrastination. I'd never considered defining some choices as enabling myself, but the author presented the concept in a way that hit home. Another section that struck me was the suggestion to free oneself with honesty. One of my favorite lines comes from page 139, where Hughes states, "A mask used to deceive others tends to become a prison." Learning to practice honesty with yourself is essential to inner peace. I loved how the author's suggestions were direct but compassionately written. Hughes demonstrated loving others with his writing.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. When I first started reading, I sometimes felt like the author repeated himself unnecessarily. However, as I kept reading, the reasons for this became apparent, and I appreciated the conversational tone more. In It Together was an exceptionally well-written book.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. The message flows naturally and uses a conversational tone to convey potentially complex concepts. There were no grammatical or spelling errors, which is exceptionally rare. Furthermore, Hughes broke the narrative into small, digestible chapters that allow timely gaps for contemplation.

In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All truly is for anyone. The author explicitly outlined how anyone can enjoy the book, and I agree with his perspective. The book can be heavy philosophically, but one need not have experience or background in this area to understand it. If you are interested in self-reflection and have an open mind, this book is for you.
