I have now read In It Together by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes twice. The first time I read it, I remember thinking it was a lovely book that encouraged us to love ourselves, each other, and to live in the present. The second time I read it, I found myself scribbling notes in the margins as I reabsorbed the content. I wrote words like “philosophical,” “humorous,” and “meatsuit” as I vacillated between snorts of laughter and deep thoughts.

In It Together starts with an opening letter that says that “there is a force of unbelievable love and goodness deep within you, and that force is you more than anything is you.” What a beautiful, powerful, and optimistic way to begin the book! The author then discusses what unites us as humans: a universal struggle to live in the present and to be happy with what we have. The author’s premise is that, by releasing the self-defeating need for more, we can enjoy every moment in the present more deeply. If we stop fighting against everything, we will find peace and happiness.

I enjoyed reading this book both times I read it. The author was masterful in his ability to weave moments of humor around the heavier ideas. For example, I appreciated early in the book when the author went from quoting René Descartes to discussing unicorns and Santa Claus. These moments of levity kept the book moving, even as we read about deep philosophical ideas and grappled with spirituality.

I also appreciated, again, that the author encouraged us to read the book, despite our differences of opinion, religious beliefs, and political affiliations. In today’s divisive climate, where no one seems to agree on much of anything, this book was a breath of fresh air. Regardless of our differences, at our core, we are all human. Towards the end of the book, I appreciated the author’s giving concrete suggestions about how to find inner peace and spiritual liberation.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was exceptionally edited; I didn’t find a single typo or error. As someone who usually reads books on her Kindle e-reader, I had forgotten the power of a beautifully printed, hardback book. It is worth buying a hard copy of this book. The print version is formatted in a way that makes it easy to read and enjoy. I would recommend this book to anyone searching for a way to re-energize themselves. This book offers many suggestions that are worth reading more than once.
