One of the most difficult experiences in people’s lives is the loss of a loved one. To live with a loss like that can be all-consuming and devastating. In Meg Nocero’s Butterfly Awakens, the concept of moving forward in life after such tragedy is explored. Meg Nocero faced a lot of trials and tribulations in life, from being bullied to finding out that her beloved mother had breast cancer. Despite all the prayers in the world and the author’s best efforts to save her mother from the disease that takes too much too fast, her mother passes away. The person that was so precious, so near and dear to the author’s heart, simply wasn’t there one day. How will she cope? How will she move forward?

The book is divided into three parts. They all focus on different aspects and parts of the journey of grief. It is long, complex, and messy. But the author shows us that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we can get there. How does the author transform herself from a caterpillar to a butterfly?

I truly have no words when it comes to this book. The raw grief that radiated from the pages was devastating, but it made the book even better and the transformation even sweeter. Each chapter began with a lovely quote that served as an appetizer for what was to come in that very chapter. I really enjoyed those and found that they made me excited to see what was coming.

An issue I face in a lot of non-fiction books is that they often fail to form a connection with me; they’re not always my cup of tea. But that was most definitely not the case with this book. The way that this book was written, the tiny personal details, the way that the situations were described, it was all phenomenal from start to finish. The tragedy in the book felt like a gut to the punch and reading about the author’s transformation felt like a friend’s achievement.

I found absolutely nothing that I disliked about this book. If I had the emotional capacity for it, I’d reread it right now. The writing flowed really well, and I found no errors in it, so in my opinion, I thought it was edited quite nicely. This is why I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to anyone who is grieving and wants to learn how to move forward and make the best out of life.
