Review of Madame Ph.D.

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Madame Ph.D." by Gwynette Ford Lacy, Ph.D., MBA.]
Madame Ph.D.: Growing Up Black in DC and Beating the Odds: Nettie’s DC Story of Perseverance, Hope, and Determination (PHD) by Gwynette Ford Lacy is a book that mirrors the author's life story, her little beginnings, and achievements up until her Ph.D. It profoundly captures the struggles, dreams, and resilient nature of a young black woman. This story portrays the necessity of good, tactical, and quality planning toward one's destiny.
It tells the story of Gwynette Ford Lacy, who fought hard to succeed against all odds. Being born in the 1950s and raised in Washington DC, United States, where there was obvious and intense discrimination against the Black folk, she made a decision to go as far as the Whites would go in their careers and lives and made it a point of duty to achieve whatever it is the Whites were capable of achieving. Coming from a poor background, tuition was quite difficult, so she studied so hard and she also worked part-time jobs during the holidays. Her husband was always there to comfort and encourage her when the going got tough. This book can be considered as the personal development version of "good things don't come easy." Would Nettie find her place in her career and society at large? Would she have it all?
On the positive aspects of this book, I loved how the author captured the theme of love and support using Gwynette's immediate family, friends, and husband. They all had their different ways of showing their support. I also liked how the author wrote the story. She took us down memory lane and made me feel like I had experienced those moments with her. The major themes of this book, perseverance, hope, and determination, were well expressed throughout the course of the author's life. I liked that she was self-motivated and hardworking. Also, the book was written in simple diction.
I tried so hard to find a negative aspect of this book. In the end, I could not come up with any. I believe the readers would have a lot to learn, but most importantly, they can learn the fact that no height is unattainable if only one can persevere, have hope, and be determined. In consideration of everything I've mentioned and the fact that this book was sufficiently edited, I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to everyone, especially young women who feel they can't achieve much as women. I also recommend this book to people that lack self-motivation. This book would serve as a motivation to people who are faced with issues that may discourage them on the possibility of achieving their dreams.
