Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is not your ordinary self-help book. This book will awaken you to a wonderful, awareness. This awareness is referred to as consciousness, self-discipline, and spiritual freedom. The real you is referred to as your soul, consciousness, true self, or spiritual self. He refers to your body as your false self, pseudo-identity, or your ego. You are a soul. You have a body. Love is the theme, but you must learn to love yourself first. Temporal unity means unifying your human self over time. Spatial unity means unifying humanity across the geography of the whole world. Be content. Don’t fret over the past or the future. Be present. Love unconditionally. Try is a false term. It’s a noncommitment. Don’t try, do.
What I liked best about this book is it’s admonishing you to do your best and to accept the rest. This phrase can help to give you peace of mind about the past as well as the present. This peace in turn opens the door to love. Do less, better. Don’t over-promise. I also like Mr. Hughes’ frequent quotes from historical figures such as Jesus, Descartes, Reverand Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Voltaire, Reverand Dr. John Watson, Albert Einstein, and many more. One of my favorite quotes is by Reverand Dr. John Watson, which is, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
There was nothing about this book that I disliked. I found the spatial unity section difficult to understand. Rereading that part is helpful.
I recommend this book to all mature audiences. I say mature because of the tendency to be egocentric as an adolescent. It is relevant regardless of your religion or non-religion. As Mr. Hughes says, “There are many paths up the mountain.” Whatever path you choose, it encourages you to embrace it further. There are some difficult concepts, so an open mind is helpful. It’s tempting to recommend this book to everyone you know as you imagine what a wonderful world this would be if everyone followed these practices. However, your enlightenment does not require anything from someone else. You are solely responsible for your own enlightenment. You can be truly happy by being present and being you. You are worth it, so give it a chance.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It appears to be professionally edited as I found no errors while reading it. The only error I found was in the editorial praise section.
