Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is truly an amazing book unlike any other book of its kind. A philosophical read without the undertones of condescension, the book is like a soft holding of hands leading you through its pages as it gently nudges you to start questioning your beliefs and understanding of the world starting from within.
The book, despite its playful tone, starts off heavy with topics relating to marital rape and starving children. As always, no matter the narrator, those are hard pills to swallow when presented with the facts but unlike other reads, the author does well on easing the breaks and steering the topic away from any political and/or religious biases. Hughes does a wonderful job towards the beginning of the book to make sure the reader understands that they are not about to be placed under attack or even scrutiny regarding their religious beliefs or even ethnic background.
One of the shining aspects of the book for me was the tone that the author set throughout. It was playful and kind, there was no judgment present throughout the read and I oftentimes found myself immersed in the book as if I was reading a letter from a friend. "Maybe the greatest stories don't start with happy endings." A sentence written by the author followed with an explanation that maybe the hardships that you went through and cling onto are nothing more than a small blip in the story of your life - that you can choose to be happy. The beginning may not have been your choice, but the ending - the journey - can still be yours to define and make great no matter who you are. A book that makes you peel back the layers of yourself can only truly be understood by a friend, and that's exactly what the author became through the read.
There weren't any glaring errors or negative judgments that I could make about the book. The tone set throughout the book completely sold it for me, despite being someone who doesn't quite enjoy books such as these, I have no complaints hence why I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The author did a brilliant job of bringing the entire book together seamlessly without any jumps from one topic to another without an anchor.
It's truly a wonderful read and I would recommend it to anyone. Due to the easy nature and conversational tone that the author takes, I believe this book is perfect for both teenagers and adults as it is clear that the author took great importance in making it accessible for all with how easy it was to understand without sounding self-important or condescending as most philosophical discussions tend to be.
