Review of Reconfigurement
In Reconfigurement, E. Alan Fleischauer walks the reader through methods to plan for retirement. As the life expectancy of people in the United States increases, it becomes increasingly important for people to plan ahead for retirement. This is what Fleischauer attempts to address in a holistic way. Rather than simply reiterating the importance of insurance, investing, and 401ks, which are addressed in detail, Fleischauer starts by discussing the importance of planning for what you will do to savor your life during retirement, whether that be travel or turning a hobby into a new career.
This book was excellently executed and the author's experience on the topic shone through in every detail. I found no errors in the editing. Some sections of this book can be very dull, not terribly shocking considering the content; however, Fleischauer helps hold the readers' attention by periodically including jokes. Not all of these jokes directly connect to the content, but they are appreciated all the same. This book also includes information for further learning on the topics discussed, such as book recommendations and online personality quizzes, since it is more of an initial overview in planning.
My favorite and least favorite thing about this book is its pacing. While I appreciate the fast pace because I don’t have a long attention span for economics, with more difficult topics, such as different types of investments, the speed made it difficult to understand. There are also a couple of instances, such as IRA, where Fleischauer didn’t provide the meaning of acronyms, which made those passages more difficult to understand.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. As someone who previously knew nothing about the topic, I am amazed at how much I was able to learn because of Fleischauer’s easy to follow writing style. Due to the excellent writing and lack of errors, this book deserves nothing less than a five. My only criticisms of this book may have been due to my lack of previous knowledge and the book’s goal of being an overview. Therefore, I didn’t count this against the book’s rating.
I recommend this book to anyone who is starting to consider their retirement, or someone, like me, who is interested in planning ahead. This book is a great overview for people that are considering how they should execute their retirement as well. This book is even great for people who have no interest in economics, because the author’s humor shines through and keeps the reader engaged in the subject.
