In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All, written by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes, brings words on a page about pertinent life events and problems to life. While this can be a complicated book to understand, it brings peace to the reader and opens one’s eyes about man. Whether it is love or world hunger or children, Hughes strips away any miscellaneous information and simply goes down to the basics. Constantly using “we” and “your,” Hughes conducts a powerful partnership between himself and the reader, portraying himself as trustworthy and that his ideas are substantial.

From the very start, the author, Eckhart Aurelius Hughes, establishes himself as an authentic and non-judgemental person as he repeatedly states it is not a political book, and he is not trying to uphold religious beliefs or alter anyone’s values. The subheadings and organization of this book really made it clear when Hughes was moving on to a slightly different but associated idea. I really enjoyed the complete ideas of each chapter, allowing a big takeaway after each section, yet, each chapter fluidly connected to the next chapter, holding a grasp on the reader. I liked how the author implemented rhetorical questions at the end of the chapters and throughout the book. This helped me look introspectively at my own life and consider my thoughts and feelings.

At times, I thought that the book was heading towards a pessimistic view of the world, but Hughes essentially just states the reality of our society. With any philosophical book, there are so many rudimentary ideas, and sometimes, they were a little different than my own ideas; however, after finishing the book, I came to realize the inner peace that it brought me. Sparsely around the book, Hughes would joke that the book is over, but then says “Just Kidding.” Maybe he is simply adding humor, but I didn’t quite understand the meaning behind it.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is beautifully written and discusses challenging yet foundational ideas about different aspects of life. It takes the reader on a philosophical adventure and brings about an enlightening experience.

I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a peaceful state of mind. Since some of the ideas in the book are challenging, and there are references to Greek mythology and other philosophers, it is unsuitable for young children and maybe not early teens. People who keep an open mind and fancy philosophy will surely appreciate and take delight in this book.
