The Woman Warrior by Kingston

The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston is an autobiography mixed with myths and stories told to Kingston by her mother. Throughout the book Kingston struggles with her identity and tries to decide which part of her is American and which part is Chinese. Kingston's mother is a complex paradox. On one hand her mother supports Chinese traditions of suppressive women roles but also tells Kingston of miraculous woman like the Woman Warrior. I enjoy to story of White Tiger the most. The story is a mix of myths and legends of such as the Ballad of Mulan and mixes it with other tradition Chinese stories. Throughout out the book there can be some confusion in the transition being the stories and legends and Kingston life. Overall it was a pleasant read and an interesting look into first generation American identity struggles.
