28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer is a collection of stories about the author’s disastrous dates. These dates span over twenty years. Mortimer documented her dates from the age of 20 years. She met these potential partners online, on dating sites, and met some of them face to face. On most of these dates, the guys made the first move and asked her out, but on some dates, she made the first move.

Most of these dates started on such a positive note that I was rooting for the relationships to go beyond the first date, then I remembered the title of the book, and my hopes would be crushed. Some relationships showed potential, while some were disastrous from the word go. Read the book to find out which dates were the most horrendous ones.

The layout of the book is clear and easy to follow. In each date, details about the author’s age, location, where she met the date, and how the date asked her out are included. These details provide crucial background information and provide context. At the end of each date, Mortimer shares her reflections about the date and the lessons.

In her reflections, she acknowledges her contributions to the dates and mentions what she will do better or improve on. I liked that accountability. It built her character over the years. I also like that Mortimer advocates for women’s rights and empowerment through actions. She talks the talk and walks the walk. She built a house in which she plans to house older women who are single and in need of companionship. She has also created a community for women to come together and share their experiences and give each other tips and tricks on navigating disastrous dates.

The only aspect of the book I did not like was the detailed description of some nasty incidents on some dates. But I understand the need to include these details to paint a clear picture for the reader.

Reading this book was such a pleasant experience. Despite the foul language used by some of Mortimer’s dates, the explicit and vulgar words were masked and replaced with palatable, non-profane terms. I appreciated that honorable and respectful aspect. The book appears to have been professionally edited, as I did not pick up any error. Sex is mentioned, but briefly and not in explicit or gross detail.

I enjoyed reading this book and rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I have no reason to deduct any stars because the book was a smooth and enjoyable read.

This book is ideal for winding down this festive season. If you are looking for a light-hearted read packed with humor and gross yet hilarious dates, then this book is for you. It is packed with a variety of dates and personalities that you are bound to identify with one or two guys from Mortimer’s dates. I recommend this book to ladies between the ages of 20 and 50 years. Gentlemen will also benefit from reading this book.
