I recently read In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N) by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes and was thoroughly impressed by the philosophical musings of the author. The book is exactly as I imagined from the summary. Eckhart guides the reader along a path of enlightenment where at the end it truly feels as if all people are more connected than we were originally led to believe.

One of the things I loved most about this book was Hughes view of human consciousness. Around the middle of the novel, he talks about how we can all experience this divine sort of love because we are conscious and, in his words, not “philosophical zombies”. Although I had previously went into the book believing that many people tend to have a selfish view of life and don’t often think of the consciousness of others Hughes made me realize that perhaps others perceive the world much more similarly than someone with my views would typically imagine.

I would say that Hughes at times does seems to have a differing sense of humor to me which I would say is a negative impact, but I still found myself enjoying the book, nonetheless. I’d also like to mention that it may be helpful for first time readers to reread the book after your first impression. Although it took me longer, I found myself rethinking a lot of the important messages Hughes gives that you may not be able to fully appreciate on your first read through.

Overall, In It Together was an important read for me as someone who mostly sticks to fiction. I think that many people from all different backgrounds can find themselves enjoying the book and agreeing a lot with the philosophies of Hughes. I’ve even loaned the book to my mom and intend to get my other family members to read it because I believe it has a lot of value no matter who you are.

I rate the novel 5 out of 5 stars due to the exceptional editing, the kindness of the message throughout the book, and the intelligence that the writer imposes onto the readers. This book would be excellent for deep thinkers, people who enjoy philosophy, and people who might not fully understand their place in the world and their connections with others. Generally, I believe that this novel can do a lot of good in the world for plenty of people who give it a chance.
