The book In It Together by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is a book that is unlike any others. It is also a book that gets better the more times you read it, as you will gain more insight each time you read it. Through a series of chapters, each of which could stand on its own, Hughes attempts to reconcile our perception of reality with our spirituality. Hughes claims that there are certain fundamental truths that unite all of us. One of these truths is love. The book also addresses why more of us do not do more for others, and why we are all inherently selfish.

The book was full of positive aspects. First, it was emotional and forced the reader to examine himself or herself very closely. It raised questions that were difficult to answer. It addressed topics that are difficult to discuss. There were chapters on subjects like addiction, world hunger, and abuse that the author approached head-on. The author did not shy away from asking many tough questions. On more than one occasion, I stopped reading the book in order to give serious thoughts to the words on the pages. I also found myself highlighting numerous quotes.

However, there were a few things that detracted from the overall impact of the book. First, while the author attempted to be unbiased, there were some examples where the author’s own judgmental opinions seeped through. In certain circumstances, that is not a bad thing. However, in this book, the author claimed that certain characteristics did not define us or matter. Yet, pages later, a condescending tone was used regarding the same characteristics. The author’s own opinions and judgements tainted certain parts.

Overall, I rate this book five out of five stars. The writing style had a great flow and was easy to read. It challenges the reader with difficult questions and contains inspirational quotes. This was the second time I read the book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it more the second time. I was able to read it without any expectations and truly consider each rhetorical question. I also found myself reading certain chapters a third and fourth time, as they resonated more with me after multiple readings. I did not find any errors and believe the book was professionally edited.

This book is ideal for readers who want a challenging book that will inspire them, yet one that will also question their beliefs. It is nice that the chapters do not have to be read in sequential order. Each chapter touches on a different topic. It can be read at different times, so it is not ideal for those who are wanting a “page-turner”. It would also be good for philosophy students or scholars. It is also a great book that can simply be kept nearby for someone to read a chapter or two when time allows.
