Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together is a beautiful and interesting book about being human and how we are all untied by similarities in our struggles, our egos and our minds. This book is a manual on how to change the way each of us views the world and our special place in it; not just from our eyes but from our souls. It encourages us to give less importance to the material things in our lives and more importance to the experience and joy of life itself. In It Together encourages us to care for one another, but to especially care for our own selves and nurture the person that lives within.
There were far too many positive aspects of this book to include in one review. Eckhart Aurelius Hughes writes some bold statements that I read multiple times to get the full effect. His words evoke emotion and deep thinking from his readers and he encourages them to really look at the person that they see every morning in the mirror and LOVE that person. I felt as if the author was speaking directly to me. Most days I barely give myself a glance other than to put make-up on once each day. I have no memory of ever really looking and really seeing myself. I am embarrassed to stand and stare at my own face in the mirror and send love my own way. Now, however, I feel more courage to start challenging myself to make eye contact with my reflection for at least a few minutes each day and begin a new relationship with myself. I, like many others, spend a lot of time caring for my children and my spouse, and my aging parents and worrying if I am doing enough. In It Together has encouraged me to be better to myself and not feel guilty about doing something for me. While the book is spiritual, there is no judgment for those who may not follow religion or feel any spirituality in their own hearts. The words in this book were carefully thought out and placed likes stones across a stream...a path to help the reader safely navigate from one way of thinking to another, if they choose.
The only criticism I could offer for In It Together is that sometimes the words were put together in such a way that my mind couldn't initially make sense of them. A few times I had to re-read a sentence or paragraph multiple times and still felt I didn't grasp what was truly being said. This could have been due to the environment I was in when I was reading or maybe I was distracted by other thoughts when I should have been focusing more on what I was reading.
I give In It Together a rating of 5 out of 5 . The book was well-organized and flowed very well. It was edited with such detail that I don't recall seeing any typing or grammatical errors to distract from the reading. I finished this book and felt my life was better for having read it and immediately thought of who I would recommend to read this book. I do not read books more than one time, and I am already planning on reading this one again later this year. I think this book needs to be read at least twice to truly understand and appreciate what has been written.
In It Together is a book appropriate for any person aged 15 or older. Younger teens could certainly read the book as there isn't anything inappropriate or offensive, it just may be difficult for younger ages to grasp the concepts offered. This book is a great read for every person because it is written for any human who desires more peace and an overall happier existence.
