How committed are you to your cause? What lengths will you go to ensure you achieve your dreams? If you are looking for inspiration, A Dream for Peace is just the book for you. It details the life of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, a political activist, freedom fighter, and pacifist. The author was born in Constantine, Algeria, to a humble but strong family. His mother, who raised him (his father having died when he was at the tender age of five), advocated for and prioritized education as a key element in her child’s life. She was also a devout Muslim who ensured her child grew up with strong values founded on a strong religious background.

Dr. Ghoulem excelled in his studies and went on to study medicine in France. He started political activism while in university and advocated for his country’s liberation. His journey was not easy, and he encountered challenges such as being imprisoned, racism, and even threats from government authorities. Further details of his political activities and quest for peace are outlined in the book; grab your copy of A Dream for Peace to know more.

What I loved most about this autobiographical book was the author’s resilience in pursuing his goals despite the hardships he faced. It was quite satisfying to see the author succeed despite the metaphorical roadblocks in his path. I also loved learning about Saighi customs and culture. The book has pictures of various people and things discussed. This provides evidence of the things discussed and gives the reader an insight into what the people looked like.

There is a bit of humour, for instance, where the author is asked to inspect fish to check whether they are fit for consumption and treat a cow despite not being a veterinary doctor and that not being his specialty, which made the book enjoyable. I also found the author’s respect for other religions quite refreshing. He stuck to his own beliefs but also acknowledged and respected other people’s beliefs. All in all, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah lived an extraordinary life, and I greatly appreciated that he took the time to tell us his story.

I disliked nothing about the book. It was professionally edited, as I only encountered one recurring error, but this did not affect my enjoyment of it. The book was also quite enjoyable despite being lengthy. I, therefore, give it a rating of five out of five stars.

I would recommend this book to people interested in learning about Algeria’s struggle for independence and political activists. The book would also be beneficial to anyone looking for motivation to see their goal through to completion. Although I do not think anyone would be offended by the contents of the book, caution is given to atheists as it features some religious themes, including inter-religious relationships. This is, however, done in such a respectful manner that I do not think they would offend anyone.
