Review of A Dream For Peace
As a diplomat, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah made a huge mark on the political affairs of the world, most especially in his country, Algeria. He worked alongside renowned political figures like Robert McNamara, Mao Zedong, Golda Meir, Yasser Arafat, John Paul II, and John F. Kennedy. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was very diligent in his activism, and writing his life memoir was a wise thing to do as readers would learn a lot of things from this man's life. His book, A Dream For Peace is a nonfiction autobiographical memoir.
One major thing he was known for and documented was how he struggled and fought for Algeria's independence and decolonization from the French. He did this with so much nobility and doggedness, and his efforts paid off because Algeria became a sovereign state thereafter. Also, he was a great team player, forming a brotherhood with students from other French colonies in North Africa to fight for their freedom from the French colonists. Ghoulem Berrah also had a close relationship with President Houphouët-Boigny to whom he was a special advisor. Both of them worked hand in hand for the betterment of the country.
On the medical front, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah proved himself to be a genius. His innovative ideas solved scientific problems. He was the first scientist to formulate the reverse transcriptase enzyme hypothesis. He earned a medical degree from a university in France and later became a professor in America.
Another thing to love about Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is that he was a very witty and intelligent man who was a natural leader and problem solver. A man named Fidel Castro was about to give a hateful speech, which would have caused a lot of issues. However, he came up with the idea to mute the microphone during the speech delivery, and that was how a problem was cleverly avoided.
I appreciate his including pictures as a reference to the activities he wrote about. It was fun going through the catalog and noting the faces of those he met while still alive.
The author wrote about his marital life. He had a blissful and fulfilling love life and marriage with Titi, a beautiful Ivorian woman.
On the negative side, the lengthy pages of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's memoir were the only aspect of reading that bothered me. I wished it were shorter while I was reading, but then it was an account of his life experiences! What did I expect?
A Dream For Peace contains some minor errors that are negligible. I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because the book was also professionally edited.
Finally, I recommend Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's memoir to readers who love to read autobiographies of people and have an interest in politics and Pan-Africanism.
