Review of Dying Well
Dying Well by Susan Ducharme Hoben is a very interesting book that expresses how difficult it is for one to come to terms with losing one’s life. It displays love and affection in a very passionate way. The story is mainly centered on Bruce’s family. Bruce was married to Susan, and his brother John had married her sister Jane. Their first child, Sasha, was married to John, and Justin, their son, was married to Kylie. In the year 2000, Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer. The fact that her mother and grandmother were breast cancer survivors made her breast cancer predictable. She was later diagnosed with a benign tumor in her heart called a myxoma. Finally, after her heart surgery, she retired in 2003.
Another medical episode began in 2008 after Bruce was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. At first, Bruce’s condition seemed like one that could be handled with surgery, but it was later confirmed that it was a high-grade tumor, and he was no longer suited for curative surgery. The rest of the story unfolds as we see the love and support shown to Bruce by his family and friends as he battles through this life-threatening condition. Did Bruce eventually survive this illness? Find out more as you read this book.
I find the emotional aspect of the book most interesting. The author was careful in pointing out how short life is in a less fearful way. Love and affection were expressly represented in words and actions. The main positive aspect of this is the intent of the author. The author was really intentional while writing this book, as she made it obvious how important it is to live a good life and how beautiful it is to be surrounded by loved ones who are always ready to care for and support you even in tough times. In the book, Bruce encounters situations when he needs to make difficult decisions, but his wife's presence and support help ease the process.
I found no negative aspects while reading this book. The book was clearly written carefully for the reader’s edification. Every emotional reader would find this book a luxury, as the book contains no content that can affect a reader in any negative way. The book was exceptionally well edited, indicating that there was no typographical or grammatical error. I would therefore rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because I did not find any negative aspects of the book that would justify a lesser rating.
Family is really the major reason I see behind marriages. There is no individual that does not come from a family, showing how important family is in the life of every individual. I recommend this book to every reader who knows the value of family. I also recommend this book to any reader who is not against a show of love and affection toward a loved one.
