Review of A Dream For Peace
The book is titled A Dream For Peace. The memoir is written by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. The book contains seventeen chapters. The page count is 634.
This is the tale of a Muslim hero who, from his early years till his death, refused to submit to any tyrant in his country or to the policy of second-class citizenship. Through the prologue written by the author's acquaintances, the book very artfully introduces the author. It illuminates the devoted and unwavering nature of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. It reveals the author's dedicated and loving side toward his family, friends, country, and faith.
Dr. Ghoulem, a traditional realist, was born in Algeria which was annexed by the French government as a French mainland. Since French colonists were living in Algeria at the time of the author's birth, he grew up watching them strolling around the serene and sunny gardens of his village. However, native Algerians could not access those gardens.
The author dives deeply into the traditional ideals of his clan and faith. He emphasizes the great harmony, respect, and love that existed amongst the clans and families. He also discusses his early schooling, which was mostly comprised of Qur'anic school lessons and kindergarten classes after breakfast, on the same topic. The author recounts how his mother made a point of getting him up before dawn so that he may go study the Qur'an Pak before being sent to kindergarten to learn other topics, such as the French language.
The author also discusses the mutual respect and love between the Jewish and Muslim neighbors who lived there at the time. The author's family, a highly esteemed clan among Algerian natives, placed considerable value on horseback riding and receiving a deep and sophisticated education.
The author was first exposed to French in elementary school and was taught to accept French as the mother tongue, but Algerian local kids never seemed to agree with that. The author's life's freedom began with this incident. When the author entered middle school, obvious racism entered his academic life. When the author encountered the harsh truth that the education community, led by the French, was founded on a prejudiced and racist approach to Algerian children, this racist behavior caused a burning yearning inside of his heart from an early age.
Dr. Berrah's achievement of perfect grades and honors for his incredibly extraordinary academic performance was unaffected by the prejudiced teacher community. He enrolled in a medical program in Bordeaux while studying abroad there. The author joined a number of revolutionary organizations that worked to aid those constrained by oppressive conditions. The author did not let himself be discouraged from opposing this unjust behavior of the French people, who frequently engaged in violence and injustice toward the downtrodden Algerians. The friends the author acquired during his time in Bordeaux backed him totally during those events.
At the start of the Algerian Revolution, the author's mother was in critical condition. He encountered suspicion from the French police on the way. The author's hometown ended up serving as the focal point of the revolution. The author’s desire for an independent country was further fueled by the Vietnam victory against the French Army. The Algerian students’ assassinations further fueled the call to action for the author and other members of the same revolutionary organization. The author escaped to Spain where he was surprisingly brought to prison even after being a refugee because his female partner resisted extradition. He met the party head of the newly independent Moroccan nation after being released from prison and was introduced to him.
The memoir chronicles a lifetime of struggle against significant, nationally and internationally circulating personal, social, and political issues. Readers will follow the author as he experiences various life-altering events and achieves his freedom for his country. The author continues to perform well after moving to America to complete his microbiology degree. He even took part in presenting a reverse transcriptase enzyme hypothesis that took the world by storm around the world.
The author's country gains independence, but because he is dissatisfied with the political ideas of the government, he relocates to Cote d'Ivoire, a new region under President Houphouet Boigny, where Dr. Berrah led an exemplary life in addressing numerous political issues like the Israel-Palestinian conflict, economic growth in the nation, and successfully preventing a coup against the president.
The book provides in-depth insight into how amazing Dr. Berrah was as a person, as a devout Muslim, as a perfect husband, and as a dedicated friend in both his political and personal life. He never failed to work toward his goal of becoming a future leader who many people admired and envied. While reading, the readers will solely be delighted by the wisdom he has garnered from his extensive life experience. The life of this exemplary leader saw many historical figures like Nelson Mandela, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II, and President Obama.
The author's struggle and passion for serving the public can be encompassed in his own words: “I believed in a vibrant society where each individual could aspire to reach their potential and where our thoughts intersected at the center of the ideals of liberty, peace, and justice.”
I rate this book 5 out of 5. This book's thorough and useful approach to illustrating the history of numerous countries battling for freedom makes it one I would heartily recommend. Along with Algeria, Somalia, Morocco, and other nations were addressed in a political mirage. The book's plot is quite motivational and encouraging for the readers. As it takes you on a historical journey and demonstrates excellent leadership qualities of not only the author but also the personal and political friends and family he was surrounded by, its minute and the thorough tale is incredibly astounding and mind-boggling to read.
The work is expertly well-edited and free of any negative aspects or flaws. It is also a must-read advice for everyone who wishes to improve their lifestyle and morale with believable leaders in a complex plot.
