A Dream for Peace is the memoir by a devoted Muslim, physician, and diplomat, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. In his book, Dr. Berrah cites numerous historical events that attest to his efforts to work for world peace. He fought for the independence of Algeria, his native country, and at one instance found himself imprisoned due to his activism. His ideology was to fight for the rights and freedom of African nations, rejecting communism and any other form of dictatorship.

As a Muslim, he experienced prejudice, hatred, and those who feared him because of his faith. He realized that the world views all Muslims as terrorists. However, he took every opportunity to educate people to eliminate this assumption from their hearts and minds. He spoke at NATO after the bombing of the towers in 9-11. As a staunch advocate of interfaith, he openly voiced his belief that the major religions all believe in Almighty God. He advised and counseled religious leaders who were Muslims, Christians, and Jews. He married a Catholic, often attending worship services, not only in Muslim mosques, but in Catholic churches as well. His faith led him to resolve conflicts and make major diplomatic decisions through prayer.

He obtained his graduate education in the United States. He learned that education creates leaders through study of history and government. When he returned to the African continent, he was called to serve many decades in Côte d’lvoire as a representative and confidant of President Houphonët-Boigny until the leader’s death.

He impressed me with his familiarity of historical events in America, such as Watergate and the assassination of President Kennedy. He met all the presidents from President Eisenhower and ending with President Obama. He witnessed the age-old struggle between Palestine and Israel and created a rich, colorful narrative about his efforts to bring a peaceful solution to their conflict. The only negative aspect of the book might be its length, 644 pages. He included many photographs, letters, and documents that enhanced the memoir, which was his final duty on this earth.

The book was carefully and professionally edited. His efforts for world peace are well documented, therefore, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to an audience interested in the world history of Dr. Berrah’s era. I also recommend Muslims, Christians, and Jews to mirror their lives on the life of this great man. His faith did not deter him from speaking and advising men, women, and children of all faiths to seek peace on this earth. He believed in God and in people—that we can create peaceful solutions and live in democracy with the freedom to elect leaders and practice our faiths.
