Review of Dying Well
Growing old and the miracle of sleeping and waking up are little things we take for granted. On different occasions in life, people experience a lot of illnesses, and when you get a glimpse of their challenges, you will be grateful for the gift of life. Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss by Susan Ducharme Hoben is based on a true story.
It all started on a Saturday morning, December 23, 2000, with a couple whose lives seemed okay until Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer and was almost finished with her chemotherapy when she developed a tumor. They met the doctor, who tried to explain the situation to them, and Susan had to undergo surgery. They both agreed they would throw a party if she survived this surgery. They carried on with the surgery. They were not alone. Their children, Sasha, Justin, and friends all came to wish for a quick recovery. They threw the celebration of life party, which was a big one as both schoolmates, colleagues, and family members like Jane and her husband John, who were the closest, were present, and the party was a success.
Eight years later, Bruce was rushed to the hospital, and on getting there, Susan met her husband on his sick bed and hugged him. She tried to communicate with him, but he was still in shock. After a while, they spoke. Bruce had overheard the nurses talking about the problem, and Susan was angry about the carelessness of the nurses. They met with the doctor to discuss the issue, and she promised her husband that she would stand by him as he was also there in her trying times. A lot of suspense was in the air. Get this book if you want to find out about Bruce's illness and if they pulled through.
This book appealed to me because it was based on real-life experiences. The book taught me many things that many people don't know about certain diseases and how to manage and treat them. I liked her strength and courage because she never stopped believing. Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss also highlighted the importance of family in life-threatening situations and sharing information about terminal illnesses with friends and family. I liked that Susan and Bruce's siblings were married to each other. I had only heard about such things in movies.
I didn't find any reason to dislike this book. I recommend this book to anyone going through trying times, who has a loved one suffering from a terminal illness, and who loves to read true life-based stories. I encountered a few errors in the book, which show that Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss by Susan Ducharme Hoben was professionally edited. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because the book touched me emotionally and made me see that there is more in life to be grateful for.
