History is a flashback and a reminder of the past, a remedy for the present, and a foreshadowing of the future. History helps us to remember the labor of our past heroes. A Dream For Peace is a memoir written by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. The author is "a big deal" when it comes to Africa’s history of colonialism, the struggle for independence, and the post-colonial reality. Thanks to this memoir, a sizeable portion of Africa’s history is preserved and intact.

A Dream For Peace is a compilation of carefully assorted narratives of some special events in the author’s life. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, a true nationalist, freedom fighter, political activist, diplomat, and medical practitioner takes up the noble task of penning down some important shifts and turns of events in his life and his prominent roles in ensuring Algeria’s independence from the French colonial masters. Ghoulem Berrah, the only surviving male child of his mother hails from a humble background. Showered with so much love, care, and encouragement from his ever-supportive mother, he excelled greatly at his studies and became an object of envy and a beneficiary of scholarships. Ghoulem Berrah succeeded on many fronts, including his scientific endeavor and diplomatic career, even though he struggled a bit in his love life. Did he find fulfillment and accomplishment in doing all that he loves? Did he get drowned in all the ever-surfacing challenges?

There’s a lot to like about this non-fiction. Firstly, the storytelling style is brilliant. I enjoyed reading the book, and I certainly read without an itch. History always seems like a complex concept, but the author narrated this story in an easy-to-understand manner. This made my experience quite seamless. Secondly, the plot was well-developed, and there was no dull moment at all. I liked that the pieces of information given were not just compressed or summarized ideas. I also liked that there were facts and important pieces of information about real events that took place in the past, most of which I had little or no prior knowledge of. This was an insightful read. The language synchronized well; the non-English expressions blended well with English, and it almost didn’t matter whether I knew what they meant or not.

What is there not to like about this book? The answer is nothing. I have no reservations; I liked everything about the book, and I am happy to say that I read this book with satisfaction. This book was remarkably edited. I did not encounter any errors in it. My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

Although it has some religious content because of the author's religion, it is suitable for readers of all religions. I recommend this book to every purpose-driven person, lover of history, nationalist, and budding diplomat. I believe this book will motivate readers not to give up on their dreams and goals. Even in the face of challenges, your dreams are valid. Never settle for less or give in to a life of mediocrity.
