Review of Reconfigurement
[Following is a volunteer review of "Reconfigurement" by E. Alan Fleischauer.]
If you’re anything like me then you have probably found yourself putting off your financial planning till it was a bit too late. Whether it is waiting for that perfect job or looking for the perfect plan, there is always something holding you back. You think you have all the time in the world until you wake up one day and realize you don’t. This is exactly what E. Alan Fleischauer’s Reconfigurement seeks to prevent.
Fleischauer has years of experience in financial services/planning and he brings that expertise to this book. He delves into matters ranging from general financial planning options, retirement options and pensions to health care services, ensuring you have a legitimate will and even checking if you are in the right career/job. It is good to know the various options available to you and to note that any given plan is not a one size fits all option. You need a plan, be it a pension fund or a health insurance plan, that is specific to your needs. There are also various perks offered by employers and the government that many people may not know of that could be advantageous. While one would definitely need to consult a financial planner to best evaluate their own financial future, the information Fleischauer has shared in this book is invaluable.
I find anything relating to finance matters boring. It is just not my cup of tea. I force myself to get into it for my own good but almost always find myself distracted or asleep and I eventually just give up. However, I found myself getting through chapter after chapter of Reconfigurement. Even though the subject matter is dense and tedious Fleischauer has managed to bring it to life. The book is written in a more conversational tone than an academic one which makes it much easier to process. Fleischauer has simplified the language and explanations as much as he could. He has also tried to be very jovial and added jokes throughout the novel. The humorous tone he has tried to maintain throughout the novel while dealing with such wearisome topics lightened the overall tone of the book. I also loved that he gave relatable examples of his real-life experiences to help us understand the importance of planning ahead.
I have no negatives about this book, apart from the fact that I really wish there were a version for non-Americans. But, that’s just because this is such a helpful book. Even as a non-American there is a great deal of information that is useful to me.
The subject matter of this book is not a favourite of mine, yet I still enjoyed this book and was able to extract valuable information from it. This is definitely a book I wish I had read sooner in life. There were a few minor errors, but it was well written so I would say that the book was professionally edited. I, therefore, rate Reconfigurement 5 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend this book to anyone 20 years and older. It is never to early to start planning for your future and it is also never too late to start (if you haven’t already started). As they say, better late than never.
