Review of A Dream For Peace
In A Dream For Peace, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah recounted his journey. Born in Algeria during French colonization, Berrah displayed early resistance to colonialism. His political activism heightened during his medical studies in France, where he joined anti-colonial organizations. Facing arrest, Berrah fled to Spain and was briefly imprisoned. After his release, he continued his fight for Algeria's independence, eventually moving to Morocco to work as a doctor in a war-torn town. Seeking to strengthen the resistance, Berrah enrolled in law school and received a scholarship to study in the US, becoming a scientist. However, Berrah felt a calling to do more for Africa and left his position at the Yale School of Medicine to serve as a special advisor to President Houphouet-Boigny in Cote d'Ivoire. There, Berrah dedicated himself to building the country and finding love.
The book has a wealth of positive elements. I appreciated the author's openness in revealing his emotions and thoughts on various life issues. Through the book, he gave readers a glimpse into his life as a diplomat and the obstacles he faced along the way. He candidly shared his opinions on the various leaders he encountered. I was struck by the author's boldness in standing up for his convictions and his unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. I was inspired by his selflessness and tireless efforts to ensure the well-being of his people. The author's unwavering faith in his country and its future is truly remarkable.
Another thing I admired about this book was the touching love affair between Dr. Berrah and his partner. Despite facing challenges stemming from their diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, their unwavering love and faith in each other never wavered. The author's vivid storytelling brought the setting, including colonial Algeria and sacred pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Mecca, to life with such detail and beauty that I felt like I was experiencing it all firsthand.
The author's background as a diplomat gave him a unique vantage point to observe and participate in pivotal political events. He shared captivating stories and provided insightful political analysis, making the book a valuable read. The addition of photos and supporting documents adds depth and richness to the reading experience.
There was nothing I disliked about the book. It has made me appreciate the role of ambassadors and the contributions they make to their countries. While the book is lengthy, it is packed with interesting and informative content. The book is professionally edited with only a single typographical error. Given this, I rate A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah 5 out of 5 stars. The reasons for my rating were the positive aspects mentioned. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in memoirs, political history, or the African political landscape.
