28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer is an easy, non-fiction, fun-loving book containing a humourous and light account of some of the worst to downright terrifying dates of the author's life. She begins the book with an introduction as to what got her to write this book and mentions the more serious aspects of dating in it. She comforts her readers in the introduction with the statement that they are not the only ones who have had horrifying or borderline traumatic experiences while dating. She also cautions her male readers to never repeat the behaviour she mentions in her book. She then moves on to chapter one and date number one in her book. Each chapter contains one disastrous date and starts with the basic context of how old the guy was, the location, how they met, and who asked whom out and how. She navigates the struggles of finding true love and not giving up as the book progresses. Her journey in the book spans from England to Australia to Los Angeles. Read about her journey of having her resilience tested by all the frogs she had to kiss in this spectacularly addictive book.

Starting off with the pros, as there are so many, the best thing about this book was obviously the author's humour which I greatly enjoyed. She mentions in the book that she's the kind of person you would find laughing at their own jokes, and after reading this book, I can see why. I loved her ability to make light of her disappointing dates, as we all know, modern dating can be a minefield and sometimes leave you feeling hopeless and disheartened. I do not usually enjoy a friendly, direct author-to-reader style of writing, but Poppy's writing had a charm to it that will keep you hooked, and it was also an easy read.

Another thing I loved about the book was the variety of first dates she went on, from adventure theme parks to scary rides to simple and sweet meals. It gave so many great ideas for a good and exciting date, and of course, it also warned the readers about where to definitely not go on a first date. Despite essentially being an entertaining book, this book also taught many lessons, and I found myself repeatedly admiring the author's determination and optimism.

There were no cons to this book; from the writing to the title to the cover of the book, everything for me was perfect.

I give this book a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars rating. It has been a long time since I found a book so easy and exciting to read. The author's sunny and charming personality leaks onto her words and makes the book a wonderful read. Although this book may seem slightly catered towards a female audience, I recommend it to all adults and young adults as it is an excellent account of modern dating and will leave you with some surefire dos and don'ts. If not, it is sure to have you laughing out loud alone in the room.
