My Brave Face: A Memoir of Love & Courage Through the Life of My Son by Heather Simpson is a non-fiction book based on the true story of the author's life. Heather was born with a rare bone condition known as Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), which made bones weak and would easily break. She always broke bones and would spend the most time in the hospital. When she grew up, the condition made her have low self-esteem since it affected her social life. She married Ray, and they got Stephen, who unfortunately inherited the condition. He would sometimes cry and break his ribs; when Heather and Ray took him to the hospital, the doctors would think the broken ribs were due to child abuse. They visited different places as he grew up trying to cure his condition. They left the United States for Australia to a facility for people with disabilities. Heather had just joined the university to continue studying psychology. Will they find a cure for Stephen? Read this book and find out.

This book was emotional to read, having to think how difficult life must have been for Heather's family due to her condition and that of her son. She explained the story providing pictures of every step of life they experienced, their happy and painful moments. The pictures facilitated storytelling, making the reader understand every moment of life Heather's family had. The flow of the story was great. She describes each moment of life her family had without overlapping events, making it easier to follow the story. The author did a perfect job of bringing the emotion accompanied by the events they experienced. Sometimes she would pity her son when he broke a bone because of the pain he experienced. She describes those instances well, making the reader feel her pain.

Heather's story of her life and that of her family was detailed. She presented the story well; hence, nothing to dislike.

I rate My Brave Face: A Memoir of Love & Courage Through the Life of My Son by Heather Simpson five out of five stars. The book was professionally edited because I found an error. The book had a flow, and the information was well-presented. Her narration of the story using visual aids to fill in the blanks was great. She was so perfect in the storytelling since she made the reader feel the pain she went through. With all these, I think the book deserves a perfect rating.

I recommend this book to anyone with a disability and those without but who live close to people with disability. Heather explains how hard it was to live with a disability and how to live with people with disabilities. She urges people with disabilities to have esteem despite how people treat them.
