Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is a breath of fresh air in a time when individuals are searching for direction in the middle of chaos and turmoil throughout the world. The book brings to awareness the self in society and the real self that is inside each person. This real self is what the author suggests we discover to unite with others. Eleven suggestions are offered to help each to search for inner peace, love, and acceptance. While this book may not resonate with every reader, it can be a resource for daily strength to many others. This can only be determined by the reader. Surprisingly, I found the book to be revealing in the thought, integrity and expansion of self-awareness during the read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to find inner peace and strength on a daily basis.
Starting from the introduction, Hughes sets out the struggle for each person to unite in ourselves and with each other. It is a rarity to find an author who takes the time to explain what the struggle is about in each of us by becoming aware of self and the real self. He accomplishes this through examples from society, life itself, the struggle each of us has to discover our real self, and those who have gone through this struggle in previous times. Some may be discouraged by time spent on this stage; however, it is necessary to make sure the reader and the author are on the same page so the journey of discovery can be made together. Hughes favorably adopts the role of mentor to achieve this with the reader.
While easy to follow and read, the absorption of the content is intense and, for some readers, requires a break to think through the points being made. The organization of the book has some breaks provided which help with this. The reader may still find this to be difficult while sorting through the rethinking needed to fairly consider the philosophy. Other than this point, I found nothing negative in the presentation or reading.
The book is, in my opinion, rated 4 out of 4, as I find it an exceptional and in-depth study of the philosophy of mankind that would benefit any who read it. Due to the nature of the book, I rate the presentation as amazing in its simplicity, as well as one that will be referred back to often by the reader. I give this a rating of 5 out of 5 for the presentation that is made to the reader.
I recommend this book for students of philosophy and/or religion, with the added caveat of any adult looking for a purpose in their everyday lives through self-analysis. Hughes has definitely hit the mark in self-realization which adds to the importance of rereading and use as a reference throughout life.
