The Client’s Dance- the client’s process by Barrie St. John is a book in the non-fiction genre. The book guides psychotherapists on developing a good therapeutic relationship with the client which would be a learning experience for both the parties involved in the process.
The author sets off with giving an explanation on the objective of this book and what are the goals or aims that he hopes to achieve with this guide. The author proceeds to the next section where he introduces himself and narrates his journey to become a successful multi-model therapist. The main section of the book kicks off after this part. The book is divided into thirty two chapters. Each chapter deals with a particular theme or question and concludes with a summary where the author summarizes the essential points made in the chapter. The chapters focus on themes like why is there the need for hypnotherapy and counseling, working with the client, the importance of confidentiality and ethics in therapy, the fallacy of guaranteed results, the different stages in therapy like storytelling, deeper questioning, body communication, etc.
The author has given a frank account of his therapeutic approach in this book and how he conducts therapy sessions with his clients. On the onset of the book itself, the author is clear about what prompted him to write this book and which audience this book caters to. I think this is major plus point, since the author warns the potential reader beforehand that this book is not a wholly academic exercise and therefore readers who are not interested in the author’s take on things should steer clear of this one. This brings me to the second plus point of this book which is that this book is not purely an academic discourse penned down by the author. This quality makes the book accessible to a wider range of reading audience, and not just psychotherapists. This book focuses on the practical side of therapy and does not rely heavily on theoretical methods.
The author guides and gives some pointers to therapists on conducting their therapy sessions, for example, he advises an integrative approach making use of both therapy and counseling or matching the client’s words with his/her actions to help the client. The author emphasizes particularly on non-verbal communication and advises the therapist to look for bodily communication to effectively analyze the client’s state.
The book contains various other tips which would prove helpful for young therapists starting their practice. This book provides a different view to the practice of therapy, focusing a lot on hypnotherapy. In addition to this, the straightforward and simplistic manner in which this book is written would make it appealing for the layman as well. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
