Review of Reconfigurement
E. Alan Fleischauer's Reconfigurement is a down-to-earth book on how to reconfigure your life to better plan for retirement. It is something all of us put off doing, this book gives you the tools to start to ensure you can live comfortably in retirement.
The book runs through the basics of how to find a new job that can suit you in retirement, life insurance, social security, investment fund options, retirement plans, health insurance, long-term care, wills and trusts, college savings, and where you can read more to plan for your retirement.
I have to admit that planning for retirement is not something I had given a lot of thought to before now. While I have some money aside in a savings fund and some insurance, I've never really looked into how much I need to save to retire comfortably or thought about what I might do to supplement my income. The book certainly gave me some food for thought about what to do in the years ahead.
The book is not written conventionally. It is designed to make what can be a pretty heavy topic light. Fleischauer uses colloquial language throughout the book and peppers every section with appalling dad jokes to lighten the mood. This helps to make what could be an inaccessible topic for many into something your everyday person could read.
Fleischauer does a great job of giving simple explanations for what can sometimes be very complex topics. The book is also well-divided into clear topics that make it easy to understand and follow.
It does feel like the book ends quite quickly. More work could have been done to the end of the book to round it out and bring the concept of a Reconfigurement plan together at the finish. Fleischauer also notes in chapter 13 that he had intended to write a chapter about part-time jobs and working from home which would have been great to see here, even if only in a summary form.
Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. While some of the jokes could have been better, the book does a great job of making a hard topic simple to understand and follow.
I would recommend this book to anyone ready to start planning for or saving for retirement. It is very specific to insurance policies and savings options available in the USA so it is best suited to readers living there, although parts of it are relevant for those from overseas.
