Review of 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
Have you ever had such a terrible date that it haunted you for a long time? You are not alone, as it happens more than you think. 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir is just as the title says: a collection of the most horrible dates that the author had while looking for the perfect guy for her. Every chapter of the book is divided into three sections: the first with a brief description of how they met, the second with the details of the date, and the third with brief reflections and the experience she gained.
To begin with, I really appreciate the sense of humour of Poppy Mortimer and her ability to joke even during the most traumatic dates; if I were in her shoes, I would definitely break down and cry or panic most of those times. As the book is written in the form of a memoir, the reader can experience the dates from a first-person point of view, even though it may result in second-hand embarrassment moments. The lessons learned from every date at the end of the chapter were a nice touch, as they showed the personal development of the author. The book may serve as a guide on how to stay conscious when meeting strangers, as not everyone can turn out to be faithful in their dating profiles. What is more, just like in my case, it can bring consolation to those who did not go on numerous dates and thought that they were missing something in life, but as the author proved, it could be for the best. Most importantly, the book taught young people to always trust their guts, and if your date is disrespectful towards you or the people around them and gives off red flags straight away on the first date, they are not worth your time, and you should stray from them at all costs.
It was such an amazing book that I could not find any flaws, maybe just the fact that it was a bit too short for me, but it is probably for the best for the author, as she suffered from enough terrible dates.
I rate 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir a solid 5 out of 5 stars. It was such a pleasant and indulgent read that I could not find any downsides. Moreover, it is a well-edited book, and I did not find any errors.
I would recommend this book for people over sixteen years old, as in places it contains slightly more mature content, but it is still suitable for older teenagers. If you are looking for a light read with hilarious stories but also a moral, this book is perfect for you.
