Review of Uplifted
Stress does not discriminate. Stress can be felt by anyone, anywhere or at any given time. Anything around you can cause someone stress if it is under the right circumstance. The thing a person needs to be aware of is the reaction to the stress one encounters. You cannot change the circumstances you encounter but what you can change is your attitude towards the situation which in turn changes the reaction you have. The attitude you have shapes the type of day one will experience.
Susan Smith Jones wrote the self-help/ wellness book entitled Uplifted: 12 Minutes to More Joy, Faith, Peace, Kindness & Vitality. The book for me was an eye opener and game changer. Susan wrote this particular book to make individuals aware that no matter what one goes through they have the choice and ability to have a healthy body and mind. She points out that you can change at any time and start making small changes as little as 12 minutes a day. In this 360-page book, she introduces ways to make one healthy mentally, physically and spiritually. The ways to promote changes she mentions are easy and free. You don’t need ample amount of time to spare to implement these changes, but the benefit you receive will be monumental.
I absolutely adored Uplifted. There are so many positive features throughout that I truly enjoyed. Quotes from different books, prominent individuals and authors are found throughout. She quotes several verses from the Bible. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Michelangelo and James Allen are a few individuals she quoted. The author incorporates through an intermission a Humor time. Jokes and funny stories are found in this section. She uses stories from her own life experiences and some she heard. I appreciate the style and tone the book is written in. She breaks the book up into 3 parts with several categories/ topics in each. The 3 parts are 1) Choose a Halcyon Life of Vim & Vigor, 2) Cultivate Joy, Optimism & Vitality and 3) Flying High in Life. Her tone she writes in is like she is speaking to a friend rather than an ordinary audience. Unlike so many others she does not claim change will be easy and happen overnight.
The only negative I saw and felt might be off-putting for some is for me there were many words I did not know and had to look up. Many won’t want to take the time, like I did, to look them up. On a positive note, most of the time you will be able to guess the definition just by reading the entire sentence.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book was easy to read and to follow. There is a variety of information found inside. Her sources are from her personal experiences and her patients’ successes along with well know studies. The 12- minute Action Step she provides are simple, can be done by anyone and be accomplish quickly.
This book will be beneficial to anyone who wants to take back control of their own life. There are some who would not benefit from this book. Susan is very outspoken and bold about her walk with God and the necessity of a relationship with him, so if one is not a believer or has a problem with information pertaining to faith then this book is not for you. There is also a lot of information within the book so if you have trouble with very detailed books this might not be beneficial. I hope that the ones who come across this book take a chance and try to read this book. It might be lengthy, but you do not have to read it all in one sitting, instead read and use it as a study guide one section at a time.
