Review of The First Time Father
The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie is a self-help book based on the author's experiences after the birth of his first child. Alfie begins his narrative by listing all the things new parents need to know to get off to the best possible start to their pregnancy. It's full of detailed concepts that can also be very useful for a first-time pregnant woman. The book then moves on to advice for parents, ranging from the most obvious things like avoiding alcohol and raw meat to less obvious things like installing night lights in the bathroom.
I really enjoyed reading this book! What makes this piece of literature particularly interesting, however, is the fact that it was obviously written by the author as a sort of diary that he later turned into a book to help others. As I said in the previous paragraph, it's full of little ideas that can help both parents a lot, but often go unnoticed in everyday life. Some of my favorites were: indulging in at least one meal together, preferably prepared by the father-to-be; saying things like "I get to feed the baby" instead of "I have to feed the baby"; stocking the freezer just before the baby is born; dealing with the man's snoring. These are such little things, but I am sure they would be a big help to the pregnant woman. I really loved them!
I can honestly say that there wasn't anything in the written part of the book that I did not like, but one thing that I thought was unnecessary was those random pictures of couples showing pregnant people doing activities throughout the narration. Other than that, everything was wonderful!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars! If I could, I would even give it one more star! The narration switches from serious to humorous several times, which I think was the right balance to make this read lighter. The writing style is simple and straightforward. The author does not stay on one topic for too long, which I thought was brilliant because it meant I never got bored while reading! The book is also undoubtedly professionally edited. I didn't find any grammatical errors in it.
I would recommend The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie to any man who is about to become a father. I think it might also help some men who are already fathers change some of their bad habits. In addition, it could be a very interesting read to share with your pregnant partner. It might help make life at home so much more enjoyable!
