Per our great leader's suggestion, I am starting a thread to sing the praises of a book I wish to nominate for BOTM.

With the new regulations a book must be on four different users shelves to be nominated...this book is currently only on two. Please consider adding it to your shelves.

This is a journey through time, space, and emotion. From WWII, to the 60's and 70's, to present day. From Scotland, to America, to Singapore. From fear, to acceptance, to joy. This book is like a guide to surviving.

Alan Cumming survived.
This is the story of how he did it, and how a grandfather he never met helped him.

I won't be forgetting it any time soon.

So, ReadandRoll[, what did you enjoy about it?

I downloaded this book from my library back in February. Prior to reading it, I did not know who Alan Cumming was as I watch little TV other than sports. From what I took away from Alan's life story was his candor and his ability to suppress his father's cruelty. His ability to learn his craft of acting as a survival mechanism is profound when many would have simply given up under years of torment. I applaud his break-through and think everyone can learn a little something from his memoir.

And...again, I too think this book deserves nomination to BOTM for anticipation of a long thread of heart-felt comments.

He allows us in to see something very personal, private, and painful. He basically opened a wound and bled onto the page.
I appreciated one main message (I don't want to say what it is...no warning for spoilers) and think it's one many people need to hear.

It really wasn't just a book for me...it was more like an experience.

I don't know what Scott would reply to. Though, I was thinking about asking if the requirement could be lowered for non-fiction books, as they're less popular.
But that seems like a moot point

I need to read this ASAP. I have been a fan of Alan Cumming since I've seen him play the emcee in the broadway show, 'Cabaret'. Looooong time ago. Unforgettable.

I'm glad you found it! It's an amazing (and emotional) read. Alan Cumming has been one of my favorite actors for several years, as well.
It was so fun reading it...I could hear his voice as though he were reading it to me. Needless to say, he comes through very clearly.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

And...it is currently on enough shelves to be nominated for BOTM

I hope more people get interested in it.
I think it could surprise people who think it's just another showbiz memoir...that's not what it is at all...it's so much bigger than that.
