Have you ever gone on a date that has turned out to be the opposite of your expectations? If yes, then don’t worry; you are not alone. In her book 28 Disastrous Dates, Poppy Mortimer recounts 28 dates that she has been to which affected her mind to the degree she couldn’t forget them ever.

The author is a lively, dynamic, attractive, and highly talented person who encounters her first disastrous date at 20. Spanning over 20 years and 3 continents, her dating experiences do not prevent her from progressing, and she keeps moving exponentially. With everything else perfect in her life, she keeps yearning for a suitable partner, even at the end of the book when she is 40.

The book is full of entertainment and hilarity. From the beginning, it feels like the writer is sitting in front of us, telling us everything as it happened. Her witty remarks and great sense of humor make the narration of the events even more colorful. It is commendable that although she went through such unpleasant experiences, some even horrendous, she manages to keep her tone animated.

What I liked most about the book was the writer’s narration style. She didn’t mechanically describe the dates but filled the hole with interesting anecdotes from her life. In the beginning, she introduces her book and explains the reason for writing it. She comes across as a staunch feminist who speaks on behalf of every woman. I loved how she empowers women in that they do not necessarily need a man to accomplish something. And she proves that aptly by putting herself as an example. Also, she powerfully conveys that remaining single is okay if a suitable man is unavailable. Another thing that I liked a lot was the way she stated the facts before recounting every date. It all becomes easy for the reader to picture the writer's physical appearance through her age, the location and the whole scenario of her meeting with the person as she provides her readers with intricate details.

Moreover, she recounts the date and what she had to go through and tells her readers what she learned from the experience. It could prove most helpful to those who have had similar encounters and those who are about to have such in the future. As she told in the beginning that there would be the inclusion of many swear words in the book, the way she presented them by using the word ‘bleep’ is not just commendable but outright hilarious too. However, there are some instances in the book where she couldn’t help but include some explicit details as they were necessary to give the readers the whole picture.

I didn’t find anything negative about the book. It is exceptionally well-edited, as I found only one typo in more than 260 pages. For this reason, I would rate the book 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to all teenage girls who dream of finding a Disney prince when they start dating. They will learn a lot from the writer’s experiences. Girls in their early and even late twenties can also find this book extremely helpful, as they will also learn valuable lessons about their dating life.
