Review of The First Time Father
The First Time Father: The Ultimate First Time Dads' Guide from Baby to Toddler is an excellent resource for soon-to-be dads. Alfie Thomas has written a book to help first-time dads be as well-prepared as possible. Self-help books and books that tell the mother-to-be what she can expect are abundant for new moms. This new book guides soon-to-be dads on this and being a supportive partner to the mom-to-be.
The author's ability to condense so much helpful information into a book of only 150 pages impressed me greatly. Alfie shares extensive details about his and his wife's journey to parenthood. You'll find answers to all your questions in this book.
The book opens with Alfie reminiscing about his time as a single man. How quickly his outlook shifted from assuming he would not become a father to expecting his first child soon after he married the woman he loved. Many people will be able to relate to this because it is a common experience.
The author discussed potential prenatal and postnatal education options for the expectant father. Even though I already have a few children, Alfie still taught me a lot. There was information about groups that a father-to-be can join I didn't know was offered. The book covers everything from getting a car seat to having the baby to recovering at home after the hospital stay. There is much information on what to expect as a parent, what to expect from the baby, how to be a supportive partner and more.
I was very impressed by how much Alfie knew about infants. From what he wrote, there was so much to learn about how far along they are in their psychological and emotional maturation at any given time. In addition, Alfie made it clear that a father's influence on his child's development cannot be overstated.
Alfie impressed me with his tips for how to help both parents to get more sleep, establish a routine, and prioritize their needs as new parents. Many topics on adjusting to the new life the author covered need to be addressed or noticed by first-time parents. They can be overwhelmed with caring for the baby. This book can remind new fathers-to-be about these essential things.
I was pleased that the author gave excellent clarification and guidance on postpartum depression and when it can start developing. This topic is easily left out of discussions and needs to be consistently recognized. So, the author making sure the reader knows about it is a big plus.
Alfie spent considerable time discussing how to prepare for paternity leave and why taking advantage of it is so crucial. To help even further, Alfie gave tips for making a soft re-entry into the workforce.
Overall, this book was very educational. Any soon-to-be dad would greatly benefit from it. There were no typos or grammatical mistakes in the book. But I noticed that Alfie referred to his wife as Anna throughout the book. Later, in the final chapters, he abruptly referred to his wife as Mirabella. I had to stop and wonder who Mirabella was. But that did not detract from the fact that the book was jam-packed with data.
Any soon-to-be dad would greatly benefit from reading The First Time Father: The Ultimate First Time Dads' Guide from Baby to Toddler. Mothers-to-be can benefit from reading it as well. I have no complaints to make about this book. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
