In the Successful Parenting Manual, Tammy Sassoon states that there is a core reason behind why many children are not compliant. During her early childhood, Sassoon had severe attention deficits combined with hyperactivity and impulsivity. Her experience inspired her to work with children who have behavioral problems and write her book to help parents raise healthy and whole children.
In her professional life, Sassoon gives workshops to teachers, principals, and parents so that as caregivers they may gain compliance from disobedient children. Most of her clinical experience in behavioral consulting comes from her own life experience with defiant children; and she uses the techniques that she talks about in this book, in mainstream, and in special education settings.
The Successful Parenting Manual is divided into three chapters and ends with a section that helps readers apply the techniques found in her book. The first chapter deals with how parents’ perspectives influence a child’s behavior. The second provides readers with prevention strategies to help parents deal with a non-compliant child, and the third chapter provides readers with techniques that one can use to encourage children to be compliant.
The main topics of this book include: the components of compliance; the importance of changing your own behavior instead of trying to change the child; and the detrimental effects of harsh language, judgments and physical punishment.
With her clear cut writing style, Sassoon actually provides readers with valuable information about how to apply the strategies that she presents. She gives straightforward examples that help adults understand how to change their unsuccessful habits into new habits that are effective; reveals the reasons why children are sometimes difficult and provides key factors which have the greatest influence over a child behavior. Sassoon’s also explains why harsh discipline is not effective and reveals the short term and long term results that come about when children are harshly punished. She points out what parents and caregivers sacrifice in the long run when they practice unhealthy ways of disciplining their child.
At first I had an objection to one of Sassoon’s statements because she asserts that readers should get advice from experts and ignore the parenting advice of other parents. Many parents don’t have access to professional intervention that is competent and have to rely on other parents to give them advice on discipline. Even though this is the case, Sassoon addresses this concern by giving sound advice to parents who are not convinced that the experts have all the answers. She reveals the two things that a parent needs to keep in mind when he or she seeks the advice about discipline.
Successful Parenting Manual is full of good and positive messages. A few of these messages include: tell good stories to get your message across, be consistent, and it is vitally important for parents to change unhealthy beliefs and perspectives. Most importantly Sassoon gives readers supportive and positive encouragement if a parent or caregiver feels that he or she cannot successfully implement the techniques in the book.
I give the Successful Parenting Manual 3 out of 4 stars. The impact of this book would have been enhanced if Sassoon had given information about how diet influences a child’s behavior, and had provided specific advice about what a parent should do when a child hits to express frustration. Also, the book had a few structural flaws. There are typographical and grammatical errors, and the layouts of the charts in the book were somewhat distracting (this may have happened because the text of the book was inserted into a PDF file). Even though this is the case, the mistakes do not outweigh the powerful information that is presented in this book.
Although this Successful Parenting Manual is directed toward parents, teachers and principle, the techniques in this book can be used by anyone who works with or cares for children. The book is full of quality information that is packed into 110 pages. It can easily be read in one sitting, but the strategies need to be memorized and practiced in order to be effective. The author suggests that a reader needs to read every part of the book several times in order to internalize its ideas.
I highly recommend Successful Parenting Manual to parents who are frustrated about disciplining their child or children.
