Chris Dreyer’s Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize is a fantastic book for current and aspiring business owners in any industry. Dreyer provides real life examples of his experiences with niching to establish his successful SEO agency for personal injury lawyers. He explains how to build a brand around a niche to provide genuine value to potential clients, and as a result, charge a premium price for that value.

I really enjoyed that Dreyer included details of his failures with niching, as well as numerous drawbacks associated with niching. It was fantastic that he really thought about the drawbacks because, in my experience, disadvantages are rarely discussed in marketing strategy books. I also appreciated how strongly Dreyer underlined the need for people to experiment widely before niching in order to identify their strengths and areas of passion. This is also frequently disregarded because so much advice implies that you must know exactly what to pursue as a business idea from the beginning.

Dreyer’s advice in this book creates an excellent guide for entrepreneurs to follow. I find his advice to be extremely motivating and instructive, and I am already putting what I have learned from this book to good use in my own small business.

To a slightly lesser degree, this book can also be used as a lifestyle guide for non-business owners who want to become an expert at something. Dreyer uses some examples from his own life on how he “niched” to learn things in his personal life, such as how he rigorously studied poker hands until he was good enough to play competitively. Readers may have a harder time applying the principles in this book to their personal lives outside of owning a business, but it is definitely possible to interpret this book that way.

I can't think of any drawbacks to this book. I give it a 5 out of 5 rating and consider it a must-read for anyone considering starting their own business or who already runs a business and wants to optimize their brand for greater success. This book can be incredibly motivating for anyone who is considering starting their own business but is hesitant to do so. Niching Up demonstrates that anyone can start a successful business as long as they have the right attitude about focusing on becoming an expert at something, even if they don’t yet know what that “something” is.
