Thomas Alfie's The First Time Father: The Expectant Survival Guide for First-Time Dads Through Pregnancy Journey is a comprehensive guide for all men who are expecting or planning to have a baby. The author wrote this book using his own experience with fatherhood and the experiences of other fathers he knew. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with pregnancy and delivery. The second part deals with how to bond with and handle the baby. The third and final part deals with how to be a good mentor and develop their skills from early childhood. It also deals with the mindset of being a dad.

Whenever a couple announces that they are expecting a child, the focus shifts to the mother. This is fair to an extent, because she is the one carrying the child. Being pregnant or a mother is not an easy job. However, for men, the focus is more on how they can provide for their partner or family. It is great that postpartum depression has come to light, and people are focusing on the mother's mental health as well. But men have their fair share of mental stress and turmoil when they have a baby for the first time.

Fortunately, for all the expecting fathers, Thomas Alfie has written The First Time Father, which does not only talk about the things men should do for their partners. It also conveys that a man's duties towards a child are much more than, stereotypically, building a crib. Having a baby changes one's entire life. This is not just limited to the mother.

Let us now talk about the positives. First and foremost, I love how comprehensive the book is. Alfie did not leave any stones unturned. He talks about the emotional and mental health of the father. He also talks about the different ways the father should support the mother. Alfie even highlights the financial aspect of having a baby. Having a baby is expensive! I'm not talking about the delivery process, hospital bills, or even diapers and formulas. These also include school fees and college funds.

I cannot find any negatives to state. The book seems professionally edited, with no grammatical errors. The book is very well structured into parts, chapters, and subtopics.

I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I could not find a single reason to deduct a star. While the book's target audience is men who are expecting a baby for the first time, there is something to learn for anyone who is planning to have a baby. Hence, I would recommend this book to anyone who is expecting a baby and wants some insight.
