I rate this book a 5 out of 5.

If you are someone that climbs into bed, turns out the light and sleeps till morning, then you probably don’t need to read The Fight for Sleep by Thad R. Harshbarger PhD. Yet. Things change and we all face sleep challenges at some point in our lives. When you do, I believe that this is the resource that you need. This is more than a book on sleep and its lengthy list of issues. It’s more of a self guided course on examining and improving your sleep, with plenty of backup information for you to look into, if needed.

It’s very well laid out and the explanations are easy to follow. The map system is clear and fits well with the subject matter as there are a variety of different sleep issues. You can easily get to the solution suggestions you’re looking for. I have consumed a number of sleep help books, and this is definitely the most comprehensive that I have found.

The depth of note taking and looking at what you are dealing with is more detailed than others I have tried before. Examining things that work, others that create problems and writing it all down definitely creates a fuller information base from which to work. The examples for you to follow are also well done - not overly detailed, but enough for you to get started and know what you should be looking at. I found a lot of new to me information on topics such as memory, problem solving and stress reduction which can and do relate to our sleep quality and length.

As a visual person, I particularly found the maps or diagrams useful as well as easy to refer to and make sure you read up on the relevant section. There are also a number of quite humorous comments and views which lightened the more serious subject matter and made me feel a connection with the author.

There is an enormous amount of information in here, so be warned, this is not a quick read! I believe that you will find new information in here and plenty of tools, suggestions and tips to work on a better nights sleep as well as understanding your particular problems getting there. An incredibly helpful book that can be referred to many times in easy to understand language and layout.
