Carole Nailen has written a guidebook for pet owners, titled Handbook for All Pet Guardians. Bettering your pet's health is the subject of this book. It's like a self-help guide for learning to communicate with and help your animal companions. The author has even provided a method for determining if your dog's food is nutritionally adequate. Not stated on the cover is the fact that all forms of animal cruelty, not just those directed at pets, are covered within its pages. She also tries to persuade the reader to advocate more on behalf of animals.

In her foreword, the author says that the book covers everything from puppies to full-grown dogs and kittens to full-grown cats. Selecting and caring for the ideal pet are also primary goals of this book. Animal cruelty, animal testing, and groups you may not want to support are just a few topics covered. The author's passion for the subject matter of the book comes across strongly in the text.

I thought it was great that they brought up spaying and neutering as a solution to the problem of pet overpopulation. It's great that the author includes instructions for house-training a puppy. I appreciate that she warns against using shock collars and against declawing cats, among other things. To even consider doing something like that is inhumane and should not even be considered.

When I learned that not all shelters mandate spaying and neutering before adoption, I was unhappy. There should have been a chapter numbering system, and I wish the index was at the beginning of the book. Furthermore, there was a missing chapter in the eBook, and the book's structure was often confusing. "Animals killed for food" is a subject I would not recommend to sensitive readers. I also don't understand why the author decided to cover every single form of animal abuse; it took the book in a completely different direction, and nearly a quarter of it had nothing to do with dogs and cats. The cover and title of this book were a little bit misleading, and I think they should have made it clear that a significant portion of it is devoted to discussing various forms of animal cruelty.

I gave this book only 2 out of 5 stars because I could feel the author's frustration while reading it. Some potential readers could be put off by this. I was capable of learning some useful information, and the advice given for dealing with specific issues that may arise as pets age is something I intend to put into practice when my dog begins to show signs of issues that might arise. The book's final quarter was very disheartening for me, especially since it had nothing to do with pets. This slowed down my reading of the final sections and altered my opinion of the book. It felt like a rant at times and was off-topic. I would have given this book five stars if it weren't for the disappointing conclusion and the difficulty in navigating the book. Since I only found a few mistakes in the book, I believe it has been professionally edited.

I think this book would be useful for anyone thinking about getting a pet, especially a puppy or kitten because proper training from the start can help eliminate the possibility of certain undesirable behaviors. More broadly, I think this book would be helpful for any pet owner who has an interest in enhancing their animal companions' quality of life. I also recommend this book if you're looking for a resource on ending animal cruelty.
